Understanding Power and Working with Resistance

This two-day program offers coaches new ways to understand and amplify personal power (their own and their clients’), and to work more skillfully with resistance that naturally arises in the process of change. The combination of lecture, theory, dynamic exercises, somatic engagement, martial arts principles and applicable life tools result in a noticeable shift in behavior, deeper insight into yourself, and an ease with tackling challenging situations with integrity and understanding.

Based on the methods and practices covered in Joe Weston’s book Mastering Respectful Confrontaiton, this training is specifically designed for coaches. You will walk away with a better understanding of your own relationship with power and resistance, as well as feel more confident to engage clients in a way that will call out their own personal power and creativity.

This training, led by trainer and consultant Joe Weston and staffed by a support team of practitioners knowledgeable about coaching and experienced in Mr. Weston’s theories and practices, is ideal for prospective, new and experienced coaches.

Day 1: Understanding Power – will offer easy-to-apply exercises and theory to reframe and deepen your relationship with power. Following this training, participants will have one month to practice and explore these principles in their daily life.

Day 2: Working with Resistance – will provide you with tools to become more skillful to creatively make use of resistance to further the client’s progress, as well as care for yourself in the process.

Some learning points:
* A model of personal power that goes well beyond the traditional notion of dominant strength
* A deeper understanding of the “four pillars” of power: grounding, focus, strength and flexibility, and how each pillar applies to the coach’s and client’s effectiveness
* Practices to strengthen each of the four pillars of true power
* Definition of resistance
* How to use “heart-centered” engagement to meet resistance
* The distinction between assertiveness and aggression
* Theory and practices designed to increase a coach’s ability to respectfully confront a client’s resistance
